It was decided in 1892 "with some hesitation" that the office of A Distant Harbour Master should be abolished, as soon Capt. Hastings could be transfered elsewhere (17168/93).
This action was taken on the recommendation of Sir William Robinson, who thought that the work could be discharged by the Harbour Master, with the assistance of a Cadet.
The Retrenchment Committee were divided, on the point; and Capt. Rumsey thought an Assistant "absolutely necessary." Capt. Hastings has now become Postmaster General, and the question arises whether the above decision should be carried out.
